ICON becomes training provider for British Weight Lifting

ICON has become fully registered and approved to deliver coaching and instructing qualifications for national governing body British Weight Lifting (BWL).  BWL has joined forces with ICON to offer a greater number of courses across the UK with ICON establishing four tutors trained to deliver the courses out of three approved centres, complimenting the existing BWL programme.

BWL is the national governing body for Olympic Weightlifting and Paralympic Powerlifting in Great Britain and is responsible for developing participation and performance in the sport. Recent successes at international events, including the Commonwealth Games, along with a growth in CrossFit training has seen the sport grow in popularity across gyms, leisure centres and fitness clubs.

Gary Denton, Director, ICON says: “We’ve seen real development in the sport throughout the UK for some time and were keen to be involved with BWL and the important work they do for the sport and fitness industry in general. This is a fantastic opportunity for us as a training provider, to be able to utilise the expertise we already have, and to be part of the future development and expansion of the sport.”

James St Leger is one of the qualified ICON coaches and will cover the South West region. A competitive athlete, he is well known in the CrossFit arena and came 9th recently in the Athlete Games, one of the largest CrossFit events in Europe.

I firmly believe courses from this leading governing body will be extremely well received and utilised in CrossFit gyms, especially where Olympic Weight Lifting is so prominent, and also amongst individuals wishing to improve their own understanding of complex lifts.”

“Teaming up with ICON makes access to these courses even easier for fitness enthusiasts, personal trainers and coaches. I couldn’t think of a better partnership to be involved in.”

David-GentDavid Gent, British Weight Lifting Development Director says: “The sport of Weight Lifting is growing rapidly across the UK and there is increasing demand for high quality learning and education packages to help drive that growth. BWL has designed its qualifications to meet that demand and so is delighted to be working with ICON as a national award winning industry-training provider, to ensure that excellence of high quality of delivery across the country.”

The three national training centres for the courses are CrossFit Portishead in the South West, 360 Ultimate Fitness in the South East, and MSC Performance in the North.
