Traineeships: an important stepping stone for both young people and employers

For many people who leave school, there’s no clear path to follow. Lots of those who leave school at 16 have no idea what to do next, which can be a scary thing to face.

This is made even harder when some find themselves out of school with neither the relevant qualifications nor the work experience to find a full-time job.

But there is another path which young people can take. Traineeships can provide a great option for those who don’t know what to do next.

What is a traineeship?

Traineeships are flexible programmes which equip 16-24 year olds with the essential skills they need to be ready for the world of work. They vary in duration and sector, but they can be tailored to your specific needs.

They are perfect for those who are currently unemployed and have little work experience but would like to get motivated for a job or an apprenticeship. They are not the same as work experience, as work experience placements don’t offer the same official training as a traineeship.

A traineeship will help young people to learn the skills that employers want and are a great pathway to full-time paid work if you don’t have a lot of qualifications or experience.

How do traineeships benefit young people?

Traineeships give you the opportunity to become independent and to find a pathway into the world of work. The highly flexible scheme can be customised to suit your needs and doesn’t even take too long – ICON has a fantastic traineeship scheme that only lasts 8 weeks.

In that time, you will build your confidence and your employment skill set and experience an exciting new environment.

You will receive multi-layered training, meaning that you will gain real skills and experiences. A trainee will be very valuable to their business as they learn practical and applicable skills whilst on the programme.

Trainees will also complete a technical certificate as part of their learning, increasing chances of successful employment.

At the end of the work experience period, you will be interviewed for possible employment. Depending on whether a role is available for you, you may even find you can get a permanent job at the company you’ve been a trainee at. In fact, over 90% of our trainees are offered a job following a successful traineeship.

There are many paths available to you after a traineeship programme. Some employers offer an apprenticeship scheme as a next step, other employment, or alternatively, you have the skills you need to continue on to the next step in your career.

How do traineeships benefit businesses?

A traineeship programme offers a free recruitment model that enables you to mould a candidate into a fully-fledged professional. As trainees learn on the job, they become very familiar with your business model and very adept at working within your organisation. Progressing a trainee to an apprentice is incredibly easy and can further the employee’s skills and value.

What’s more, since there’s no obligation for the business to pay trainees (although some do), there is no financial commitment and no direct financial cost to the employer throughout the scheme.

Many charitable trusts, such as leisure trusts and other social enterprises, find that they feel obligated to provide employment opportunities for local communities, allowing them to give back to the community which supports them.

Who can apply for a traineeship?

Traineeships are open to young people aged 16-24 who:

  • Are not currently employed (or earning a low wage and working less than 16 hours per week)
  • Are not in any form of education
  • Have not previously completed a level 3 qualification
  • Have little or no previous work experience
